Professional Development for Teachers - Winter/Spring 2004

Dates and Grade Levels: (Each workshop will be different; attend any two for one unit of college credit. Workshops are free unless college credit is desired.)

February 7 - K-6
March 6 - 7-12
April 3 - K-6
May 1 - 7-12

Location: Educator Resource Center (ERC), NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Presenter: Tom Gates, NASA Aerospace Education Specialist

Looking at Earth from space using remote sensing, real NASA data and imagery, these hands-on workshops will address California curriculum standards and demonstrate some of NASA's best educational products. These products include curriculum supplements, Web sites, and CD-ROMs that will provide new and exciting tools to teach a variety of subjects and concepts; for example:

Science Content Standards
Physical Science (properties of materials, light, color, energy, motion, etc.)
Life Science (plant and animal requirements, cycles, ecology)
Earth Science (water, land, atmosphere, systems, geologic processes, lunar science)
Investigation and Experimentation (asking meaningful questions and investigating)

History/Social Science Content Standards
Chronological and Spatial Thinking (connecting present to past, mapping skills)
Research, Evidence and Point of View (using maps/images to formulate questions)
Historical Interpretation (human and physical characteristics of places, causes and effects, land use)

Mathematics Academic Content Standards
Measurement and Geometry (shapes, measurement, classification, proportion, computing areas)
Mathematical Reasoning (setting up problems, making connections, observing patterns, estimating)

English-Language Arts Content Standards
Reading (vocabulary, comprehension of grade-level appropriate text)
Writing (organization and focus, narratives and reports)
Listening and Speaking (comprehension, report on topics, organization, summaries)

All participants will be certified to borrow moon and meteorite samples to use in the classroom.
